Undergraduate Competencies

Initiative and Entrepreneurship

Tell me about a time when a project you were working on went off track.  How did you work through the challenges in order to finish the project?

In my 2018 winter term at Sheridan, I caught influenza and I cannot remember the last time that I had been this ill. My doctor gave me codeine and meds that absolutely wiped my energy out and sidelined me for a couple of weeks.

Losing two weeks and still not feeling well, presented me a huge challenge of how I was going to catch with work and school. I had to figure out a way to restore my energy, so I would not jeopardize my grades. I went to my professors to explain my situation and they were very helpful in helping me devise a plan that would get me back on track successfully.

I can still remember the journey of getting back on track and how I went for a small jog with my dogs to help my energy, so I could focus on getting caught up school and work. The very start of my first run I made it four blocks and realized that respiratory system wasn’t fully recovered my lungs were on fire. My day would normally start at 5 a.m. and I would not return home until 9 p.m. in evening.

I decided to listen to motivational speakers on my way to work help me regain my focus and give the push I needed to get back on track. I remind me of how you have to start by establishing small goals and celebrating your successes will enable to reach your big goals.

I was successful at completing the term without having to sacrifice my grades and it gave me strategies to deal with situations like these if they were ever to come up again. I am grateful every day for my health and how I can be physical to keep my mind and body healthy. There are a lot of individuals that are in hospital beds that would switch places with us any day of the week, so we must remember how lucky we are.

I own and operate a personal training company, Fitness Expert Inc. and I needed a website that would attract new customers. I first went to GoDaddy.com and decide that I would try building my website on my own. I spent hours on this project by developing a site that was nothing I envisioned and the templates they offered wasn’t attractive.

I decided to hire my neighbor who sold me on that he would build a website that would be able to get me to the top of the Google search. After three months, the site wasn’t performing well on Google search.  I discovered he used Black Hat technique which hurts your search rankings.

At this point, I was so frustrated with my lack of knowledge of designing a website and I needed to learn the web design process, so I either could do it myself or hire the right person for the job.  I e-mailed Dr. Paul Sarkissian a professor at Sheridan and I told him my situation and he was glad to sit with me and help lead me in the right direction.  He was able to teach me what is important to be relevant online and how I needed a WordPress site. He also taught me tools that would help with my rankings and the steps for a Search Engine Optimization plan to improve rankings. After understanding the web design process, I spent time online and on Lynda.com to get a more in-depth knowledge of web design.

I was initially very uncomfortable with the whole process and after the long road to learning web design, I now know more than most of the web designing companies. I learned to be cautious when selecting someone to design your website. I worked with Darrell Keezer at Launch 48 designing my site and they were able to design a professional website that I envisioned.

Artifact #3: This artifact is a reminder that the mistakes we make along the way to achieving our goals are part of the process. We need to learn from our mistakes and don’t give up.
